Waking Up Early - How to Wake Up Early
73People often ask me, how can I get up 5 o'clock in the morning every day and be happy about it :)
It is interesting but I wasn't really an early bird all my life. I did have to get up early when I went to school, but after that my usual time to get up was 7:30 am.
That all changed about 10 years ago; when I got a job 40 miles away from my home, I had a flexible schedule and I could get in and out any time I wanted.
The first day I decide to wake up my regular hours and drive to work, and so I did. I woke up at 7:30 am, got dressed, got a cup of coffee and was on my way to work… I got there at 10:00 am. Yes, that is right, 10 o'clock in the morning, and remember we are talking only a 40-mile drive.
My blood pressure was sky high, I was tense, angry, irritated. I could not believe how much traffic I got. Yes, my previous job was about 3 blocks from where I lived and I would just walk there every day; I just never paid much attention how heavy traffic was in the morning and in the afternoon… which I will explain next.
I worked all day, trying to catch up with my new job. During lunch, my new coworkers told me I had to leave no later than 4:00 pm otherwise I would get trapped in traffic. I could not leave that early, so I left work around 5:30 pm… the highway was literally a parking lot, by the time I got home it was nearly 8:00 pm.
The next day I got up 30 minutes earlier and… got traffic.
The next day, Wednesday, I got up 6:30 am and… got traffic.
And that happened day after day after day until the day I got up at 5:00 am, everything was all quite; I got dressed, got my cup of coffee, and guess what? No traffic!
I got to work around 6:10 am. What a day!!! I worked so good, nobody interrupted me until about 8:30 am. I got a lot done.
Around 3:45 pm I was done for the day. Got my stuff and drove back home, got there around 4:30 pm.
I started to enjoy my peaceful moments in the morning so much that getting up 5 o'clock in the morning, believe it or not, became a pleasure thing to me.
Now, how can YOU get up early also?
1. Have a Purpose
I put this as number one because if you don’t have a purpose for getting up early, you won’t.
Find a purpose to get up early; to exercise, read, write, work, etc.
2. Use a Good Alarm Clock
If you don’t have one already, get a new alarm clock; it will motivate you as a milestone in your life.
Get one that you like in size and shape, some have a radio or iPod connection. I like mine with inside and outside temperature.
3. Do Not Use the Snooze Button
I know, I everybody loves that 5-more-minutes nap :)
But I figured that it only gets in your way, as you want to do it over and over again.
You will have a much better day if you just get up.
4. Don’t Sit on the Bed
If you do that, your body will push you towards going to sleep again.
Get up as soon as your alarm goes off; sit only to change positions from laying to standing. Go straight to the bathroom to pee, wash hands and face, brush teeth and comb hair.
5. Go to Bed Early
Try to go to bed early even if you are not sleepy.
Use a routine. Read my article: Are You Really Getting Enough Sleep to help you fall asleep and sleep all night.
6. Don’t Take a Long Nap During the Day
It is ok and actually good for you if you take a 10 to 20 minutes nap. However, naps longer than that will make you stay awake at night.
7. Create a Habit
Create the habit of getting up early every single day, even on weekends and holidays. Create a system that works for you and stick with it.
8. Reward Yourself
Create a reward system for getting up early.
I like to buy my favorite coffee and make it in my espresso machine.
Remember: “The early bird gets the worms.”

Once I'm awake, I have to get up! I don't like wasting the day......
I get so much more work done when I get up at 5 a.m., it's insane that I have stopped doing it. You have inspired me to get back on that horse on Monday when ALL the kids have to go back to school. Three solid weeks of Spring Break has killed my momentum.
The quiet of the a.m. really makes for a very productive time. I can even plan the healthy menus for the week. And with a newly minted vegetarian, the planning is taking longer because I don't know what to make. Thank goodness for AllRecipes.com!
Also, I sleep better when I am exhausted after getting up so early.
Thank you for taking the time to remind me to just get up!
I am an early riser, too. I embrace the morning at sunrise and I am more productive all day long. This is an awesome hub. I like your positive ideas.

I have always been an early riser. The early morning is something I have always enjoyed. It is a time to be by myself, plan out my day, enjoy a coffee in total silence. I am usually up anywhere between 4 am and 5 am.
